Premier League Title Race Heats Up
One of the best professional soccer leagues resides in the United Kingdom. It is called the English Premier League. The league has been known for its dominance of the four major teams; Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool. In recent years, the league has been known for its absolute madness. Manchester City came out of nowhere from the late 2000’s and ended up winning the Premier League in 2011-12 and then again 2013-14, causing the reign of England’s 5 teams. The 2015-16 season is one of the most memorable seasons to date. Leicester City wound up winning the League by 10 points over Arsenal, after beginning the season at 5,000-1 odds of winning the premier league. Yes, that is five thousand to one odds to win the title.
Now the question becomes “What could this year bring?” In response, it is bringing one of the tightest races ever recorded. Manchester City leads the league with 23 points through 10 games. They are in a three-way tie with Arsenal and Liverpool. They only lead Chelsea by a single point. Tottenham Hotspur is in fifth with 20 points, Everton in sixth with 18 points, and then Watford in seventh, and Manchester United in 8th, both with 15 points. Only 11 points separate the leaders and 13th place Crystal Palace. The leader at the end of the season is obviously the champion. However, they also get an automatic spot in the UEFA Champions League. Second and third place also get spots in Champions League. Fourth place gets a chance to qualify for the Champions League, but if they fail, they go into the Europa League. The fifth place team will also go to the Europa League. The bottom three teams, on the other hand, get knocked out of the Premier League and sent into the Football League Championship. This is England’s second highest division. Right now, Hull City is 18th with 7 points, 19th is Swansea City has 5 points, and Sunderland is in the bottom with only 2 points from 10 games. The Top-2 teams from FL Championship get promotion to the Premier League. Then the teams in third through sixth place have a bracket style final to see who will become the third and final team to gain a promotion to the Premier League.
All in all, the start to this season has been Phenomenal to watch, and it will only get better. Stay tuned to see how the rest of this crazy and exciting league will end.
